Acute Management of Low Back Pain?

Follow our tips on the acute management of lower back pain and ease yourself back into action.

When you experience an acute episode of lower back pain, it can be excruciating! I've personally experienced this before, when even trying to sit down sends a jolt of sharp pain down your buttock. It is very worrying that the pain can get so bad. It appears that no-one can really understand how bad it can get unless they have experienced it themselves.

Often the resting position that provides the best relief is to lay down on your back, with or without the knees bent up. Lying down puts the lowest pressure on the back and is a good starting position to investigate. Below are 3 variations that one can try that may provide relief from acute pain. The idea of acute management is obviously to provide enough relief for the individual to rest and recover a little.

Resting Positions

Crook Lying

Laying down on a firm surface your back with your knees bent up.

Crook with Chair

Crook on Chair

Laying down on the floor as above but have your legs supported up on a chair.

Prone with pillow

Prone On Pillow

Lay down on your tummy face down, with a pillow under your hips/pelvis.

It can often be nice to use some heat, such as a hot water bottle. The heat as well as providing some comfort can help to reduce any muscle spasm present. These are rest positions that you may find helpful and relieving. You may need to try each of them to find which is the most comfortable for you to rest in.

Remember, that the positions should NOT be painful and are there to try and give you some breathing space from the pain.

The acute managment of lower back pain depends upon the severity. In the scenario above with the pain relieving positions, we are considering the most acute of pains.
